Build Self Confidence in Your Child

One of the greatest gifts you can give to your children is to help them build self confidence. Self confidence is an essential trait for them to have a successful and happy life. Without it, they will constantly struggle. That being said, helping them gain self confidence and a healthy self esteem may seem easier said than done. But don't despair, there are many things you can do.

No matter what age your child, you can start doing things right now which will help him develop confidence. For starters, if you are a parent who is always doing everything for your child, STOP!! One of the most important ways for a child to develop a sense of confidence and accomplishment is to allow him to do things for himself.

Help enhance your child's self confidence by giving him or her age appropriate tasks at home.

For example, your 6 year old daughter is too young to fix dinner, but she can help you bake some cookies. Let her put the flour in and stir the dough. She can even help put the dough onto the cookie sheet. Encourage her each step of the way and praise her a lot. Don't criticize her if she makes a bit of a mess (just accept that she will!). And watch how excited she is when the cookies are done! She will feel great because she helped bake them.

As your child gets older, continue giving her more challenging tasks and responsibilities. Understand that she will make mistakes. That's how your child learns. Always praise what she did well, and use the mistakes as teaching opportunities. Don't berate her for not doing things perfectly. This will only damage her self esteem and discourage her from trying again. Her self confidence will grow with each accomplishment and success. And she will appreciate your love, support and guidance along the way!
